❀How To Get Started And All You Need To Know…..

🎀Speaker/Facilitator

πŸ—£Mr Ibrahim Odenike

Good day everyone! How was your day?

It ‘s an honour to be here tonight.

Let me begin by saying that every struggle we face has been overcome by someone we respect who is willing to tell us how it is done.
My message here is that the right
quote at the right time can often provide deeper meaning and perception just when you need it most. A perfectly worded quip can impart wisdom and wit.

Therefore, I’ll be glad to say here that an “entrepreneur is essentially a visualizer and actualizer. He can visualize something, and when he visualizes it he sees exactly how to make it happen.” — Robert L. Schwartz

I’ll be glad if I can see more hands…☝☝☝☝☝☝☝

*Guinea Fowl: What you need to know before you start*.

INTRODUCTION

My first experience with guinea fowl rearing was in the North, specifically Adamawa state.

I love eating guinea fowl eggs. So I always ask my Hausa/Yungur students to get the eggs for me.

They always complained that they would need to travel and climb hills before getting the eggs. In the long run, they’ll return with large number of eggs. This actually prompted my journey into this. Thanks to Mr Asuni for bringing the topic

Let’s look at the topic as follows:
1. Wetin Guinea Fowl be?
2. The Genesis…
3. On the field…
4. The Daunting Risk.
5. The Prosperous Feat.

*Wetin Guinea Fowl be?*

From that brief introduction, it shows that Guinea fowl is a wild bird. They are good fliers and runners.

Guinea fowl is known as ‘Awo’ among Yoruba people, ‘Zabo’ among Hausa and Igbo people called it……

Who can tell me what Igbo calls Guinea fowl?

Those☝are pictures of Guinea fowls. Igbo people called it ‘Ogazi’

Sincerely Guinea fowl farming is fun and profitable if everything can be managed perfectly.

It is a fact that guinea fowl serves as *pest control* because it eats many insects, chase away small snakes and have capacity to kill rodents.

The meat is very rich in essential amino acid while the eggs very rich too.

As I said earlier, they are naturally a wild birds so they love to flock together. This strengthen them against their predators. It’s not odd that these birds can live up to 10 to 15 years in the wild.

…but for domesticated purpose, as business man level…🀣🀣🀣
Dey no born am well make e reach that age, na market and women pots go settle the rest….🀣🀣🀣

…money must return. That’s why we are here tonight

So, the high demands for their meats and eggs encourage their domestication.

Do you know you can rear Guinea Fowl at your backyard?πŸ€·β€β™‚πŸ€·β€β™‚

*The Genesis…*

Yes, you can start rearing it from your backyard. Meanwhile, before you start these steps will make it easier. So let’s move…

1. Your environment. The first step you need to do is to study your environment and behaviour of your neighbours. This is because Guinea fowls are loud birds. They’re real noise makers.

They can start noise at the sight of strange objects including shadows.

If your environment and neighborhood condone it, congratulations! You’re good to go…
Otherwise, you have to relocate to areas like Epe and Badagry…..πŸƒβ€β™‚πŸƒβ€β™‚πŸƒβ€β™‚πŸƒβ€β™‚
2. Spacious and Covered Pen. This is because they are flying birds, the pen must be spacious and covered. I mean covered roof. They love to move freely without hindrance. This also facilitate their good production. So spacious and covered pen is for economic purpose

The pen should be covered with wood shaving

Get a clean serving tray and water troughs

*On the Field*…
We’re on the field now…
Please, do not start with large number.
You can get the keets (the young guinea fowls) .from local sellers or order from online. We’ll talk about this later to safe time…
Feed them very well so that they thrive very well
These are favourite meal to them: wheat, sorghum, millet grain. Though they can later become independent in choice of food as they can eat insects

Provide them with clean water.
They are not prone to diseases so doctors visit and cost is not an headache

Get males and females, 1 male to 4 female

They start laying in March order April until October. So if well fed, they can lay up to 100 eggs in a farming year.

Make sure you provide a box or prepared corner with more wood shaving where they can lay their eggs

They lay their eggs together in a place as many as possible, brood together taking turn in sitting on the eggs

Please, always provide light with some grains for them at night and do not give them medicated foods, it can leads to mass mortality

The reason they are good for backyard is that they can be reared with other fowls like ‘Adiye’ lol but do not include rooster ‘akuko adiye’
It’s suicide for it
They won’t allow male rival from other birds….

*The Daunting Risk*
Please, do not allow them to move freely on the open ground. They can all fly away without returning home. It happened to a Hausa friend. This is why their eggs could be picked by not original owner in the wild.

You can allow only one to stay outside the pen, it will never go away.

If you can do this, the risk is shelved. Otherwise all invested capital will fly away. God forbid!

The main, the main
*The Prosperous Feat*
My friends, ogas, brother and sisters, rear your guinea fowls only for meat and eggs products

Rear Guinea fowl only for its meat and eggs. This is where the money is.

Believe me after a farming year, you’ll make your easy and quite money. The Market is great especially during festivals.

Most hotels in Nigeria are now demanding for it because visitors especially from neighbouring African countries

Local fowls sellers are greatly demanding for its meats

For the eggs, get our ‘Igbo kwenu’ brothers they will clear all the eggs

Even the babalawos and oniseguns are demanding for this bird
A well fed Guinea fowl can not be sold less than 5k no matter what

Please, I’ll be glad if we can continue tomorrow

We can ask questions on Guinea fowl or we take questions on the topic generally together tomorrow, by God’s grace

To sleep with prayer, right intention and positive attitude is channel to another great morning. No man prays never to wake the day. Good night everyone!
