The two subdivisions are Nursery and Grow out pond operation..

The Nursery Operation stand as the basics for the grow out operation..

The Nursery involve the inducement of the female fish to lay eggs which are later fertilize and hatched into fishes which are known as fries….

These are then nurtured for 3 to 4 weeks into fingerlings..

These sizes are suitable for use in the grow out operation.

Nurturing of these fingerlings to 3-4 weeks could grow into post fingerlings and juvenile…

For the purpose of this seminar we shall only discuss about the grow out stage…

The grow out stage popularly known as table size fish are suitable for sales and consumption….

The fingerlings and juvenile when matured for 4 or 5 months grow into table size or grow out stage…

The most important factor for fish farming is the operating cost (feed)…

The types of feed been use at any particular time is the function of size of the fish been fed…

Another thing to be considered is the size and type of pond used..

Nigerians involved in catfish farming use conctete ponds or plastic tanks..both methods have their strength and weakness and it is wise for the would be catfish farmer to explore these perspectives before making a decision on which to adopt while using concrete pond seems to be more natural to cultivating catfish,plastic tanks can come handy where availability of space is a constraint…using ponds also gives the farmer the leverage of cultivating a relatively larger number of fishes as ponds design can be tailored from the outset to match intended fish density…

Cultivating tanks are however limited in sizes and fixed..thus limiting the cat fish farmer to stocking tanks with a restricted number of fishes for best result..

African catfish usually takes an average of 5months to reach table size…

At this stage they usually have attained an average weight of 1kg..the weight attained by catfish after 5months however varies depending on a number of factors that may include…

Quality of fingerlings used,quality of feeds,water management, quality of and absence of disease,stocking of density among others…

It is not uncommon to have fish weight up to 1.5kg after 5 month…

Aim of every fish farmer is to breed fish to 1kg body weight more in the shortest possible time,usually between 4 to 5 months if properly done…

Unit prices for table size fishes are between #650 and #700 per kg at the farm gate…

One gets more profit if one operates a market outlet to cut off shylock middlemen..

With respect to feeding catfish an alternative for Nigerian farmers is the use of locally made feeds.. unlike the imported counterpart,local feeds cost an average of #4000/15kg bag without considerable growth implications..

A challenge however would be to access sources of such local feeds as most parts of Nigeria are filled with the expensive imported feeds…

Fish Farming have 2 major subdivision

It could either be operated separately or as an integrated process…

The two subdivisions are Nursery and Grow out pond operation..

The Nursery Operation stand as the basics for the grow out operation..

The Nursery involve the inducement of the female fish to lay eggs which are later fertilize and hatched into fishes which are known as fries….

These are then nurtured for 3 to 4 weeks into fingerlings..

These sizes are suitable for use in the grow out operation.

Nurturing of these fingerlings to 3-4 weeks could grow into post fingerlings and juvenile…

For the purpose of this seminar we shall only discuss about the grow out stage…

The grow out stage popularly known as table size fish are suitable for sales and consumption….

The fingerlings and juvenile when matured for 4 or 5 months grow into table size or grow out stage…

Types of pond that can be use for grow out are:

Recirculatory system,concrete/plastic/wooden pond and earthen pond…

Materials needed are:

Land with good drainage system,water supply,which must be borehole, tank for water reserve,standby generator and record book….

The most common cat fish found in Nigeria are Clarias,gariepinus, and heterobranches…

FEED?

The most important factor for fish farming is the operating cost (feed)…

The types of feed been use at any particular time is the function of size of the fish been fed…

What you feed is what you get when it comes to feeding…

Another thing to be considered is the size and type of pond used..

Nigerians involved in catfish farming use conctete ponds or plastic tanks..both methods have their strength and weakness and it is wise for the would be catfish farmer to explore these perspectives before making a decision on which to adopt while using concrete pond seems to be more natural to cultivating catfish,plastic tanks can come handy where availability of space is a constraint…using ponds also gives the farmer the leverage of cultivating a relatively larger number of fishes as ponds design can be tailored from the outset to match intended fish density…

Cultivating tanks are however limited in sizes and fixed..thus limiting the cat fish farmer to stocking tanks with a restricted number of fishes for best result..

African catfish usually takes an average of 5months to reach table size…

At this stage they usually have attained an average weight of 1kg..the weight attained by catfish after 5months however varies depending on a number of factors that may include…

Quality of fingerlings used,quality of feeds,water management, quality of and absence of disease,stocking of density among others…

It is not uncommon to have fish weight up to 1.5kg after 5 month…

Aim of every fish farmer is to breed fish to 1kg body weight more in the shortest possible time,usually between 4 to 5 months if properly done…

Unit prices for table size fishes are between #650 and #700 per kg at the farm gate…

One gets more profit if one operates a market outlet to cut off shylock middlemen..

The cost unit price for table size are btwn #380 to #400..

Feeding catfish:

This constitute the bulk of the cost of rearing catfish,usually 60% and above in most places in Nigeria,
Available catfish feeds are imported and cost an average of #5500/1kg per bag, A 15kg bag can take 700 two month old fishes just 10 days to finish the 15kg bag…
